On my latest trip to India, I took two days to visit the southern India city known as Mysore, which for about 6 centuries, until 1956, was the capital of the Mysore Kingdom. The ruling family were patrons of the arts and culture, and their influence on this beautiful city can be seen in many corners of the cityscape. Perhaps the most pronounced is the amazingly beautiful Mysore Palace.
Included here are several photos taken throughout the city, with the last several of the inside and outside of the palace. Each night there is a spectacular light and sound show recalling the history of this great palace. There is the Pink City and the Blue City….Jaipur and Jodhpur. The Pink City is a tourist favorite, but the Blue City has really not yet been found by the same hordes. That is probably one reason I like it so much. Full of color and very accessible, and not very touristy,
Jodhpur is called the Blue City because when the city was about to be invaded, orders went out to the higher classes to paint their houses blue in order that they not be struck by the enemy. There is a color market around the central Clock Tower, lots of cows and the amazing Fort Mehrangarh, two photos of which are included with this collection. Punjab is a state of India, located in the northwest of the country, bordering Pakistan. It is the home state of many of the country’s Sikhs, a religion followed by about 2% of the country. But Sikhs are found all over the world and are legendary for their strength, prowess, adaptability and congeniality. Punjab was the last state to fall to the British in their bid to conquer India.
The chief city is Amritsar, which is also home to the holiest temple of the Sikh religion, known (in English) as the Golden Temple. Like the rest of India, there is much to do and see and experience here. As with most of the cities of India, it suffers from bad traffic, noise and over population. Hope you will enjoy the photos, many taken at the Golden Temple and some at a kind of model village, and the city’s fort and museum. |
About meAn inveterate traveler, I have spent a great deal of time searching for new arts and artisans, mostly in Asia. I am drawn to Asia thanks to my 25-year tenure living in Japan. During that period I traveled extensively and often in Southeast Asia. Upon returning to the US, I formed Arts of Asia in order to share the qualities I admire in Asia with my friends and customers in the US. To support this mission, I continue to spend 4 months a year abroad. The search is never ending! Archives
